Curriculum Second Grade Curriculum The Second Grade Curriculum is jam-packed with interesting and exciting topics. Based upon New Jersey's Core Curriculum Content Standards, students will be engaged in diverse topics that both stimulate and challenge them. In Math, we implement the Scott Foresman Envision Math program which integrates the use of language and problem solving. Students also complete a mad minute to improve upon their basic facts on a daily basis. The Second Grade Curriculum focuses a great deal on Literacy. We are devoted to encouraging students to develop a strong relationship with reading and writing in which they feel both passionate and confident! Our curriculum involves a balanced literacy approach which is centered around word work, shared reading, literacy centers, guided reading, independent reading, and writing. Every week we sing phonics poems/songs, read stories as a whole class, with partners and in small groups, use reading comprehension strategies, write stories about different topics, and much, much more! In Science, we will be learning about many topics like Dinosaurs, Matter, Sound, Energy, Technology, and the Solar System! We will be conducting some exciting experiments throughout the year! In Social Studies, we will be learning about Communities near and far, Maps and Globes, Native Americans, Pilgrims, Immigration, the American Revolution, Great Leaders, Government, and more! In Health, we will learn how to grow into healthy individuals! We will focus on topics such as Personal Safety and Awareness, Nutrition and Exercise, and Our Main Body Organs and Functions. Throughout the year we work hard to build our characters in our Character Education study. We will focus on specific character traits and how to apply them in our everyday lives. It is important to treat other the way you want to be treated! Point Road School also implements The Fish! Philosophy which highlights four main aspects: Play, Choose Your Attitude, Be There, and Make Their Day. This philosophy encourages children to be more positive and have more fun! | |||||||||||||||
