Homework folders:  Each student has a red homework folder which contains a homework log.  Each folder has a HOME and SCHOOL pocket.  Papers in the SCHOOL pocket need to come back to school the next day.  These papers will typically be homework and/or important notices that need to be filled out and returned to school.  Papers in the HOME pocket can stay at home.  Students will have spelling, math and reading homework every night.  At the beginning of each day, students will copy their homework into their homework logs.  Second grade students are required to read at least 20 minutes every night.  After students have completed their homework, parents should initial in the box corresponding to that day.

Spelling:   Students will complete a Notebook Choice assignment Monday-Thursday.  Students must do 3 times each on Thursday nights.

Math:   Students will complete a follow-up workbook page corresponding to the lesson that was taught that day.  Practice tests will be assigned for homework in preparation for a test the next day.

Reading:   Second graders need to read 20 minutes every night.  On days in which they meet for Guided Reading, they are to reread the pages that were assigned which will count as their 20 minutes for that night.

    Important notes:

    * Homework should take about 15-20 minutes in addition to reading 20 minutes each night.

    * All homework should be turned in on time.  If homework cannot be completed on a particular night, students should bring in a note explaining why their homework was not completed and return it to school completed the next day.

    * If students are absent they will be given additional days to make up any work that they missed.

    Good homework tips:

Homework is a great tool used to reinforce and assess the skills that were taught that day in school.

    1. Students should read the directions aloud to show that they understand what to do.

    2. Students should have a quiet space to work so that they can concentrate and focus.

    3. When students finish their work, parents and students should look over their homework together.
