Please notify the  school if your child will be absent​ by calling the  attendance mailbox (732-741-4022; select option #2-report an absence) or sending an email to kschubert@littlesilverschools.org. A can also send a note or email PRIOR to the absence. Please be aware that unreported absences are considered unexcused. For convenience, you may also use the "Contact the Nurse" option on this website and send an email message. Please include the child’s name, grade and teacher, reason for absence, and expected duration. Doctor, dentist, and other necessary appointments should be made after school hours whenever possible.

• If a student is absent more than 5 consecutive days, a doctor's note is required.
• A written statement of the cause of each absence is required immediately upon return to school.
• When a child is to be excused during school hours, please notify the office in writing, in advance.
• The child must be signed out by the parent in the school office.

The Little Silver Board of Education requires that the pupils enrolled in the schools of this district attend school regularly in accordance with the laws of the State. The educational program offered by this district is predicated upon the presence of the pupil and requires continuity of instruction and classroom participation. Students must be present a minimum of four (4) hours in order to receive credit for the day. Attendance and punctuality shall be required of all students enrolled in the schools during the days and hours that the school is in session. For their safety, children should not be permitted  to arrive at school more than 15 minutes before opening school times. There is no supervision of children who arrive before 7:50 AM. In order for a student to attend extra-curricular activities or participate in sporting events, they must be in school on that date. A report card will record the number of times the pupil was absent and tardy for each month.

Board Policy 5200, Attendance, has defined “excused” and “unexcused” absences:

1. “Excused absence” is a student’s absence from school for a full day or a portion of a day for the observance of a religious holiday (NJSA 18A:36,14-16) for Take Your Child to Work Day, or any other absence determined excused by the New Jersey Department of Education.
2. “Unexcused absence that counts toward truancy” is a student’s absence from school for a full or portion of a day for any reason that is not excused as defined above or for any unexcused absence that does not count toward truancy listed below.
3. “Unexcused absence that does not count toward truancy” is a student’s absence for a variety of reasons delineated in the policy including a student’s illness.

It is expected that parents will make every effort not to schedule vacations during the school year to avoid interrupting their child’s educational program. Missing school because of a vacation is not a recognized legal absence and teachers are not required to prepare work for students. Students who do miss school will be allowed up to but no more than 5 days to make up work when they return. These students may want to take their books with them and/or contact a friend or the school website for assignments.

Fevers are considered to be 100 degrees or higher WITHOUT taking a fever reducing medication. Students MUST be below 100 degrees for 24 hours without fever reducing agents in order to return to school. Body temperature is normally lower in the morning - it could rise later in the day.

If your child had been diagnosed with strep throat, pink eye (conjunctivitis), bronchitis, Fifth's Disease, Coxsackie, ringworm, pin worm, mononucleosis or other "catchy" illness please call or email the nurse. Your child will need a note from your health care provider to return to school.

• Please complete BOTH sides of the emergency card; make sure you sign the cards.
• Inform the office or nurse of any changes in how to reach you.
• Please be sure that the cell phone numbers given for emergency calls is a functioning number and that the cell phone is on during the school day.
• Be sure that the people you list are available to come to get your child if you cannot be reached. If that person is someone we do not know, we will ask to see a form of ID as proof of identity. Indicate ANY prescription medications/dosages your child takes outside of school hours and contact the nurse if this changes.

The best way to control the spread of lice is to report it to the nurse immediately so the rest of the class can be checked to see if there are more cases.

1. Medication, whether prescription or non-prescription, must be in the original container from the pharmacy.
2. A doctor’s note must accompany the medication specifying what it is for and how often it should be administered.  NO medication (including aspirin, Tylenol, etc.) can be given without a doctor’s note.
3. All medication must be brought to and from school by the parent, not the student
4. No student should be given medicine to take by him/herself at lunch time, etc., or carried in his/her lunch box or school bag.  Only the school nurse or the parent is permitted to administer medication to the student.  (Non-prescription medication includes cough medication, topical ointments, etc.)
5. Before any student shall be authorized to carry and/or use an inhaler or epi pen on school premises or at school functions off school property, the parent or guardian must file the following with the school nurse:

• A certification of a duly licensed physician that the pupil suffers from a potentially life threatening condition which requires immediate use of an inhaler or epi pen.  The physician shall also certify that the patient is trained in the use of the inhaler or epi pen and is capable of self-administration of the medication.
• The parent or guardian must provide an additional inhaler or epi pen, identical to the one which the pupil is authorized to carry, which shall be retained by the school nurse.
• The parent or guardian of any such child shall make a written request of the school district for permission to have the child carry and use an inhaler or epi pen. Said request shall also include a statement in form and substance acceptable to the board which shall release, indemnify and hold harmless the board against any and all liability for damage or injury arising out of the board approval of the request.

All medication (both prescription and OTC) must be accompanied by a doctor's note and must be in the original package (prescription label for prescription medications).

The Board of Education recognizes that pupils may have allergies to certain foods that may be life-threatening, and has developed a policy (5531 – Management of Life Threatening Allergies in Schools) to provide guidance to school personnel and parents. Because of the increasing number of students in our schools with severe allergies to certain foods, we have to continuously examine our procedures for providing food in school. In some cases it has been necessary to curtail the serving of snacks and foods for celebrations. In other cases, we have been able to work with parents to provide snacks that are safe for ALL of the children in the classroom. Your child’s teacher will notify you if there are severe allergies in their classroom. All snacks sent to school for in classroom eating must be from this list.
